Obamas to rent 9-bedroom house in quiet neighborhood in northwest DC

The Obamas have selected a nine-bedroom mansion to move into after they leave the White House next January.

Situated in the quiet Kalorama neighborhood in the northwest quadrant of Washington, D.C., the house has nine bedrooms, with eight and a half bathrooms including an “au pair suite.” It’s about 8,200 square feet, with a large backyard and patio, a two-car garage and a gated courtyard for eight to ten vehicles.

Here’s a look inside the house:

The decision to rent the house on Belmont Road was first reported by Politico. It’s about two miles from the White House and isn’t far from Hillary Clinton’s D.C. house near Embassy Row.

It’s valued around $6 million, according to several real estate website and an estimated monthly rent of $22,000 on Zillow.

Joe Lockhart, a former press secretary and senior adviser to President Bill Clinton, owns the house, which was built in 1928. He moved to Manhattan, however, to become the executive vice president for communications for the National Football League.

Mr. Obama will be the first president to stay in D.C. since Woodrow Wilson left the White House in 1921.

According to The Washington Post, a number of other presidents lived in the Kalorama neighborhood either before, during or after their time in the White House, including Presidents Dwight Eisenhower, William Taft, Warren Harding, Herbert Hoover and Franklin D. Roosevelt.

While the White House has not commented on the report, Mr. Obama has said he and first lady Michelle Obama plan to stay in D.C. for a few more years until Sasha graduates from Sidwell Friends School.

The GEOSmart energy efficient home improvement loan can save

Compared to competitors’ standard unsecured

What programs to open the spreadsheets with

Many of the household budget sheets are in Excel format (which has an .xls extention). But the good news is that you don’t necessarily need Excel to open their spreadsheets.

OpenOffice.org is a free software package that offers similar programs to Microsoft Office. The programs are not exactly the same, but are very similar. And the spreadsheet program that comes with OpenOffice will import Excel files just fine.

Google Docs is another great free solution to open the free worksheets. Within Google docs you can import worksheets with the .xls extension and many of them will work flawlessly. If it is a complex spreadsheet, some of the functionality may be lost in the import. Also be warned that Google docs (since it is online software) will not process data as quickly as Excel or Open Office.

Lowe’s defends pulling ads from Muslim TV show | Reuters

NEW YORK U.S. home improvement chain Lowe’s Monday defended its decision to pull advertising from reality TV show “All-American Muslim” amid charges the company had given in to bigotry.

“All-American Muslim,” which airs on TLC, follows several Muslim families in and around the Detroit suburb of Dearborn, Michigan, which is home to one of the largest Muslim populations in the United States and its largest mosque.

It has been accused by one Florida group to be propaganda. But the decision by Lowe’s sparked an outcry by defenders of the show.

Lowe’s employed its Facebook page to defend itself and called “All-American Muslim,” a “lightning rod” for “strong political and societal views.”

Lowe’s spokeswoman Karen Cobb said the company was one of “dozens” of companies to pull their advertising late last month. Names of other companies were not immediately available.

Laurie Goldberg, a TLC spokeswoman, declined to say how many companies have pulled their advertising from the show, which attracts about a million viewers per week.

“We stand behind the show ‘All-American Muslim’ and we’re happy the show has strong advertising support,” Goldberg said.

Hip hop mogul Russell Simmons said in a series of messages on Twitter defending the embattled reality T.V. show that he had bought up the remaining ad spots.

“Just purchased remaining spots for #allamericanmuslim for next week,” Simmons said. “The show is now sold out! keep your money @lowes and we will keep ours.”

A spokeswoman for Simmons said he had purchased two 30-second ads, but said Simmons had not decided what the content of those ads would be.

The Florida Family Association, a little-known group that has campaigned against the show, has branded “All-American Muslim” “propaganda” that is “clearly designed to counter legitimate and present-day concerns about many Muslims who are advancing Islamic fundamentalism and Sharia law.”

But U.S. Representative Keith Ellison, who is Muslim, said in a statement that Lowe’s had “chosen to uphold the beliefs of a fringe hate group” and given in to intolerance.

“Corporate America needs to take a stand against these anti-Muslim fringe groups and stand up for what is right because this is what it means to be an American,” he said.

Serbia says Kosovo wants war as neighbors row over Serb nationalist train | Reuters

BELGRADE Serbia’s president said on Sunday that Kosovo had shown it wanted war with after it deployed special forces to prevent a train painted with Serbia’s national colors and the words “Kosovo is Serbia” from entering its territory.

President Tomislav Nikolic said the neighbors had been “on the brink of conflict” on Saturday, while Kosovo’s prime minister told reporters the train, a project of the Serbian government, sent “a message of occupation.”

Kosovo declared independence from Serbia in 2008 but Serbia still considers it part of its territory and supports a Serb minority there. NATO air strikes on Serbia forced Belgrade to withdraw its troops in 1999, having killed 10,000 Albanian civilians there. NATO still has around 5,000 troops stationed in Kosovo to keep the fragile peace.

The train left Belgrade for Kosovo’s northern town of Mitrovica on Saturday, but stopped while still in Serbia after Pristina said it had deployed special forces to prevent the train from crossing its border. [nL5N1F40GU]

Following a specially convened National Security Council’s session, Nikolic said that by sending special police forces “Albanians showed they want the war.”

“We were on the brink of the conflict yesterday,” Nikolic said.

Kosovo’s Prime Minister Isa Mustafa said the move had been an act of protecting Kosovo’s sovereignty.

“The institutions of the Republic of Kosovo will always undertake such actions to protect the country’s sovereignty and not allow machines that will provoke with a message of occupation,” Mustafa told reporters outside Pristina.

Relations between Belgrade and Pristina came under renewed strain on Jan. 4 when former Kosovo prime minister Ramush Haradinaj was arrested in France on a warrant from Serbia which accuses him of war crimes. [nL5N1EU4GB]

Kosovo Albanians make up more than 90 percent of Kosovo’s 1.8 million population. Northern Kosovo, where Mitrovica is situated, is home to a Serb minority of around 40,000 to 50,000 people who do not see Pristina as their capital.

Normalizing relations between Kosovo and Serbia is key condition for both countries to progress towards membership in the European Union both governments are aiming for.

In 2013 Belgrade and Pristina opened an EU-mediated dialogue to normalize relations, but Serbia is still blocking Kosovo’s membership in international organizations including the United Nations.

Our neighbour and I put up on our shared property a similar snow globe as the one in the picture last year without any problem… This year when he came home he decided to pull the pegs out on his side.

I’ve put up with a lot from him. His blasting of Bob Marley, the stealing of my plants and him putting them in the compost…. But this takes the cake.

“While these neighbors may not be trashy, they are annoying as heck. Our neighborhood is very peacful and secluded…or was peaceful until these people moved in.

Their property is right on the very tippy toppy end of our property line. They have an infuriating brood of kids who literally scream everything they say at the top of their lungs, and the parents don’t seem to mind. The father is this giant glob of lard who rides around everyone else’s property on his 4-wheeler (sometimes letting the young children drive!)and seems to have an auto-repair shop in their backyard.

He revs these disgusting cars’ engines all day, and sometimes at 12:00 AM! Rain or shine, the only time he’s not out there grinding these car intestines is when they’re not home It’s a shame they never leave their house.

Many times all I’ve wanted to do is go outside and enjoy nature, but I can’t because these slobs ruin the peace. Not horrific enough for a shame notice, but definitely enough for a call to the police station to complain about noise control (or lack of it).
